- OUR CORRESPONDENT

NEW DELHI: Launching a sharp attack on the BJP and its ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said that “Gandhi would have been pained by what's been happening in India in the last few years”.

The Congress president further said that those who consider themselves supreme and indulge in the politics of falsehood will not understand Mahatma Gandhi's sacrifices and ideals.

“How will those who consider themselves supreme understand the sacrifices of Mahatma Gandhi...those doing politics of falsehood will not understand Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence,” she said, adding that we are all proud that where India has reached today, it has been achieved by following Gandhi's path.

In her brief address to party workers at Rajghat, Gandhi said, “India and Gandhi are synonymous. Yet some people want RSS to be synonymous with India.”

Gandhi's daughter, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was also present on the occasion, said, “It was the order of Gandhiji to pursue the path of truth. The BJP should first pursue the path of truth and then

talk about Mahatma Gandhi”.

Earlier, the leaders from the BJP, Congress and other parties gathered at the Parliament Hall to pay their tributes in front of Gandhi's portrait. The Congress president didn't even look at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who stood near the portrait while paying the tribute to Gandhi. Similarly, PM Modi and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi didn't even look at each other as the latter walked past the former.

Reacting to statements of Congress, BJP MP Rakesh Sinha while attacking the Gandhi family said, “Sonia and Rahul Gandhi carry the Gandhi title. What elements of Gandhism do they have? If Gandhi were alive today, he would go to the RSS shakha and become a swayamsevak.”
