Students across country to get lessons in mother tongue till Class VIII: Govt

SCIENCE AND COMMERCE TO BE TAUGHT IN ENGLISH & REGIONAL DIALECT FROM CLASS VI

- DHIRENDRA KUMAR

NEW DELHI: Students across the country will now get lessons in their mother tongue till Class VIII. According to newly added provisions in the draft New Education Policy (NEP), it has been recommended that Science and Commerce subjects would be taught in both English and regional languages from Class VI onwards, while rest of the subjects would be taught in mother tongue till Class VIII.

The idea behind moving the proposal is based on findings that children are more comfortable in being imparted lessons in their local languages. The move has also been initiated after the government faced flak over its bid to impose Hindi across the country.

According to a senior official, the government would make available quality books of all subjects in all local languages across the country.

The draft NEP also talks about motivating teachers to teach in two languages, which would ensure students understand the subject without any hassle. “The basic idea behind the proposal is to make students ready to face the world as, by the time they enter Class IX, they would be ready to read and understand Science, Commerce and Psychology in English as well as in their local language,” the official said.

It has also been proposed in the draft NEP that students from Class VI to VIII would participate in different activities on Languages of India. While participating in such activities, children would learn about the genesis of Sanskrit and the importance of the ancient language. The draft NEP has maintained that trilingual formula would remain in existence.
