Dream remains unfulfilled for BJP in Mewat

- PIYUSH OHRIE

GURURGAM: In order to stamp their authority, the saffron party wanted to prove a point by opening their account in Mewat. The party may have brought in leaders from other parties but that could not result in BJP winning the support of the voters that voted for the Indian National Congress.

The first shock for the saffron party came from Ferozpur Jhirka where Mamman Khan defeated Naseem Ahmed of BJP by a margin of over 36,000 votes.

Naseem Ahmed was the sitting MLA who had won a seat representing the INLD. He, however, changed sides and joined BJP before the assembly elections. Another Congress candidate who was rewarded by the voters was INC'S Aftab Ahmad who defeated Zakir Hussain again sitting MLA of BJP. Hussain again had changed sides and shifted to the saffron party. In the only consolation for Hussain, the margin of loss was less than 2,000 votes. While the strategy of fielding the turncoats may not have worked for the saffron party, another major disappointment was in store from Punhana where Nauksham Chaudhury was defeated from Punhana. She was relegated to the third spot and the contest was closely fought between INC Mohammad Ilyas and independent Rashsihh Khan.

Nauksham is the Daughter of retired High Court Judge RS Chaudhury and Ranjit Kaur who was the secretary in the Haryana revenue department. Chaudhury had first completed her undergraduate from Delhi University's Miranda House and then went to London to complete her masters in arts in media and communication. Ultimately the contest was won by Ilyas. To get an understanding of how close the contest the voting percentage between the winner and the second runner up was 28.76 and 28.09.

Located between Gurugram and Faridabad, two of the richest cities in Haryana, progress should have also impacted the lives of five lakh people of Mewat.
