More than 90 kids found working as child labourers in Mangolpuri

NEW DELHI: As many as 95 children were found working in various establishm­ents including factories, shops, resturants in Mangolpuri area, revealed the report of Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR).

Earlier this year, the commission had started their pilot project of mapping child labour in Mangolpuri area. The child rights body with other stakeholde­rs had conducted door to door survey of 600 establishm­ents.

According to the reports, out of these 95 children, there are 34 children who are involved with the factories while 56 children were working as helpers at various shops and the rest five were found engaged in other types of child labour activities.

"86.3 percent of children were between 12-14 years of age while others come under the age group of 10-12," report said.

The report further added that children under the age of 14 years are involved in hazardous labour. The childhood of these children was on high risk. "At the age of going to school and enjoying the childhood, they are being dragged at hazardous child labour activities," report said.

The report further added that the surveyors visited 600 establishm­ents which was very

less number.

"The area is big so there is a need to map out the whole constituen­cy to make child

labour free Mangolpuri constituen­cy," report said.

According to child rights body, while conducting the survey, the team inquired the owners , employers of those establishm­ents personally to collect the exact data that will further help in rescuing of children working as illegal labour in the establishm­ents.

Roop Sudesh Vimal, official from DCPCR, said that they informed concerned authoritie­s for the child labour rescue operations in Mangolpuri. "We are planning for awareness campaign against the menace of child labour in this area," said Roop Sudesh Vimal.

Earlier this year the DCPCR has decided to provide monetary incentives for informatio­n that leads to a child labourer being rescued.

"For the rescue of one child there is a reward of Rs 1,000 whereas rescue of twofive children Rs 2,000 is the reward whereas for six to 10 children the reward increases to Rs 5,000.The reward for the rescue of 11 or more children is Rs 10,000," DCPCR claimed.
