AI being used to monitor air quality

- NIKITA JAIN

NEW DELHI: With new technology on the rise, various methods are being created that cater to the benefit of the people. In one such invention, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used to monitor air quality. A start-up has developed software, where air quality is being monitored through satellite and AI, after which precise data regarding air pollution is shared and analysed. Speaking to Millennium

Post, the founder of Blue Sky Analytics, Abhilasha Purwur explained the functioning of the software and said, “This software gives you the data, along with graphs. Also, where is all this pollution coming. How much pollution is coming from crop burning, power plants - which plant is in compliance and which is not - all of this becomes very critical when you are trying to do environmental monitoring.”

She added that India'a monitoring system has been relying on manual monitoring. “We supplement all this monitoring with satellite-based data, which are all censor based,” said Purwur.

“The monitoring system that we have in India, and the understanding of what is causing pollution is pretty weak,” she added.

On the day before Diwali, the air wasn't that bad, however, it turned hazardous post the festival.

“There are limited resources and people have to allocate those resources and do the right thing. Before Breezer, we didn't even have that kind of data analytic and insights and understanding to make those kinds of claims,” according to Purwur.

She added that they have approached the concerned authorities and discussions are going on at the moment.

Meanwhile, the software combined through the data from the government and nongovernment monitoring stations as well as NASA and ESA satellites, which is then cleaned, organised and analysed using AI to fully understand the air people breathe.

“All of this information is available through Blue Sky's products, Breezo and Zuri which are available at Google Play Store as well,” said Purwur.
