5-yr-old girl raped in Chanakyapu­ri, 25-yr-old arrested

NEW DELHI: A five-yearold girl was raped allegedly by one of her neighbours at the quarters of an embassy in the Chanakyapu­ri area here, police said on Wednesday. The investigat­ing agency said that they have arrested the accused in the case.

The incident took place on Saturday and a complaint was lodged by the girl’s family members on Sunday, the police said, adding that the child was stable now.

On the statement of the victim’s mother, a rape case was registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, they said. “The 25-year-old accused, a driver by profession, was arrested, “police added.

According to the police, both the victim and the accused lived at the embassy quarters. The girl’s father works as a housekeepi­ng staff at the embassy.

Police added that the accused does not work at the embassy and stays with his parents at the quarters there. However, his father is employed with the embassy. The girl used to often visit the residence of the accused as they were neighbours, a senior police officer said.

Police further said that on the day of the incident, she was playing outside her house when the accused, on the pretext of playing games on his mobile phone, took her to his residence, where he raped her in the absence of his parents, the officer added. After reaching her house, the victim complained to her mother about discomfort and irritation in her private parts, he said.

When the victim’s mother questioned the girl, she narrated her ordeal, after which the former approached the police and lodged a complaint.

The girl was taken for a medical examinatio­n and doctors confirmed a penetrativ­e sexual assault on her, the police said. A case under section 376 of IPC and 4/6 POCSO Act has been registered in Chanakyapu­ri police station.

The victim’s father works as a cleaner.

The data accessed by Millennium Post revealed that till October, as many as 162 cases were registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Of these, 137 cases were solved, with 140 arrests to show for it.
