Miscreants creating nuisance, say residents

- NIKITA JAIN

NEW DELHI: Residents of Khajuri Khas have alleged that a few men entered the area at night and fired three rounds of pistol. Eyewitnesses claim that the men came on two bikes and fired shots in the air, and aimed one at the shop. The incident took place near Sri Ram Colony's E-block. One bullet was fired at a restaurant in the vicinity. Belonging to Haaji Aas Mohammed, the restaurant was not damaged but the bullet leftover was found by the owner the next day. "CCTV footage shows that around 10.30 p.m. three men on two bikes came and fired a gun. One was fired in the air, the other at my restaurant's staircase and other near the Auliya Masjid, just 10 steps from here," Mohammed told the correspondent.

Residents are shaken, especially after recent communal riots that took away 53 lives in Delhi.

Residents said that a call was made to the police. Khajuri Khas Station House Officer (SHO) came to the spot after responding to the call.

"Even though we gave the complaint, the police have not filed an FIR. We told them we would also give them CCTV footage but they refused and said they will investigate the matter," said Mohammed.

Meanwhile, the police have taken the CCTV footage, “We will investigate the matter accordingly,” said a police official.

A lawyer living in the area had filed a complaint, of which he showed the copy, but added that the police has refused to still file the complaint. "Meanwhile, they are picking up young men, who were merely defending themselves when the mob attacked the area," said Hasib Siddiqui, the lawyer.

The incident has inflicted fear in people, as on the same night a youth was allegedly manhandled by a mob who residents say came through Khajuri Khas Chowk. The youth's mother said they have no hope from the authorities. "A few men came at night and threw stones. My son was coming back from work when they attacked him," she said. The residents also said that when anyone from the colony goes in defense, they are next day picked up by the police. "They have picked up so many young men from here. This is just a way to inflict fear in us," said Alim a resident. The residents have said that some miscreants have been coming everyday ever since the riots broke out. "They either abuse us or throw something,” they added.
