5,000 detained in Delhi for violating lockdown orders

NEW DELHI: Over 5,000 people were detained in Delhi for allegedly violating lockdown imposed in view of the Coronaviru­s outbreak, police said on Tuesday. According to law enforcemen­t agency, around 299 cases have been registered under Section 188 of IPC.

According to the Delhi Police data, till 5 p.m. on Tuesday as many as 5,146 people were detained and 1,108 vehicles were impounded. They also issued 2,319 movement passes. Meanwhile, in West Delhi as many as 77 people were arrested for allegedly violating Section 144 of CRPC. A total of 77 FIRS have also been registered, police said, adding that 674 persons have been detained and 66 vehicles seized from West Delhi. In Dwarka, as many as 37 cases were registered under Section 188 of IPC in which 56 people were either detained or arrested. On 148 people actions were taken under DP Act. The data further revealed that on Monday, in 12 districts 100 cases were registered under Section 188 IPC, 475 cases under 65 DP Act and 326 cases under 66 DP Act.

On Monday, the police had registered 100 cases in connection with violations under section 188 (disobedien­ce to order duly promulgate­d by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code. On Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a complete lockdown in the national capital till March 31 in order to control the spread of Coronaviru­s.

On the same day, the Delhi Police imposed prohibitor­y orders under Section 144 of CRPC till March 31, banning protests and other gatherings. Section 144 prohibits the assembly of four or more people at one place.

On Monday, Dwarka Police registered an FIR under sections of epidemic disease act against a family for violating home quarantine rules. According to police, one Himanshu ( an employee of Air India), one Anil Singh Rathee, one Geeta Rathee, Mohit Rathee and Manpreet Rathi, all residents of Harmoney Apartment at Dwarka, were found involved in the violation.

On Sunday, Delhi Police registered cases against four gym owners in West Delhi and arrested two of them for violating the order.
