Lockdown: Delhi Police turn saviours for pregnant women

NEW DELHI: From helping a cancer patient to taking 43 pregnant women to hospitals to distributi­ng food to hungry poor people, the Delhi Police has risen to the occasion during COVID-19 pandemic.

Police said that during the last 24 hrs, PCR vehicles have shifted as many as 43 women in labour pain to various hospitals all across Delhi. According to police, from South East Delhi-15 women, Outer- 8 women, North- 5 women, Outer North-3, South West3, West-2, Dwarka-2 and one each from Central, North West, South and East were taken to hospitals.

Deputy Commission­er of Police (PCR) Sharat Sinha said that the distress calls were even received at odd hours as well as from remote areas. “Out of these, 10 calls were received at odd hours between 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and some places were as far as 14 km from nearest multi-speciality hospitals,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rajouri Garden police team helped a pregnant woman in reaching the hospital. The police team also helped a woman in distress from Assam who had lost her purse and mobile phone. She was handed over to officials at Assam Bhawan. Meanwhile, the team of Kotla Mubarakpur police station helped a cancer patient to reach her home in Okhla area.

“We saw a woman along with a child in distress near AIIMS. We asked her about the problem and she told us that there was no transport available to reach her home. Our team dropped her home in the police vehicle,” an officer said.

Reaching out 2 lakh poor people

The Delhi Police helpline number has received 474 calls from different parts of Delhi regarding no food and money. DCP East Jasmeet Singh and others have done the mapping of hunger calls. The food delivery network establishe­d in all 15 districts with the involvemen­t of nearly 400 NGOS, RWAS, good samaritans facilitate­d by the Delhi Police led to the distributi­on of two lakh prepared meal daily all over Delhi. The team of Barakhambh­a police station is also distributi­ng food to needy people in their jurisdicti­on.

Helping senior citizen

All the 15 districts in Delhi are taking care of senior citizens by providing them with essential commoditie­s. Dwarka district police have launched a special drive in which they are keeping regular touch with the senior citizens and ensuring their access to basic necessitie­s like medicines, gas cylinder and other essentials to avoid an outside visit from their residence.
