NEW DELHI: The negligence of Tablighi Jamaat has led to the rise of as many as 1,023 Covid-19 positive cases in 17 states due to its congregation. According to Union Health Ministry, about 33 per cent of the total coronavirus cases in the country are linked to “one particular place”.

While addressing daily briefing, joint secretary (health) Lav Aggrawal said that the rate of doubling of Covid-19 cases in India is pretty less as compared to other countries.

“Rigorous contact tracing in across 17 states have reported cases related to Tablighi Jamaat congregation,” the health ministry official said, adding that the states from cases have been reported include Kerala, Maharashtra, Andaman & Nicobar, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Puducherry.

“Around 33 per cent of the total cases so far are linked to one particular place where we could not sort of understand it and manage it,” the official said.

The Tablighi Jamaat congregation was held earlier last month in Delhi's West Nizamuddin area, which has turned into a Covid-19 hotspot.

India is increasing Covid19 testing capacity progressively, the official said, adding that there is no need to panic but awareness is needed to fight the battle against coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Union Home Ministry has stated that about 22,000 Tablighi Jamaat members and their contacts have been quarantined across the country so far.

During the briefing, Punya Salila Srivastava, joint secretary, told reporters that the Centre undertook “massive efforts” in coordination with states to trace the Jamaat members and their contacts to contain the spread of Covid-19.

All issues related to the ongoing lockdown are being monitored by a 24x7 control room of the Home Ministry, she said, adding that about 200 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Central Armed Police Forces are linked to it on the ground level.

The officer further said that all measures to implement the three-week nationwide lockdown, set to end on April 14, have been effective till now and the supply of essential goods and services has been “satisfactory”.
