- OUR CORRESPONDENT

NEW DELHI: Despite a continuous improvement in recovery rate, Sunday proved a ‘fatal’ day as India logged a record jump of 83 deaths and 2,487 cases in 24 hours. The number of COVID-19 fatalities rose to 1,306 and total cases climbed to 40,263.

The day brought some signs of relief on the recovery front as 869 Corona patients got cured. The number of recovered patients rose to 10,887 taking the rate of recovery to 27.03 per cent from 26.51 per cent.

Notably, India’s recovery rate is 5 per cent lesser than global which stands at 32.21 per cent as of now.

However, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) officials are quite relaxed with the single-day highest rise in positive cases. According to a senior ICMR official, a 3.54 per cent increase is not alarming anymore.

“Earlier when we were testing around 30,000 – 40,000 samples, then about 1,500 positive cases were reported. Now we have tested 70,087 samples in a day and reported 2,487 positive cases, which is just 3.54 per cent rise,” the official said, adding that it’s a decreasing trend. The ICMR has conducted total 10,46,450 tests as of now.

As per the Health Ministry data, the number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 28,070, of which 1,306 have succumbed to the disease.

Of the 83 deaths were reported since Saturday evening, 36 were from Maharashtra,

26 from Gujarat, 11 from Madhya Pradesh, three each from Rajasthan and Delhi, two from Telangana and one each from Tamil Nadu and Bihar.

With 521 fatalities, Maharashtra accounts for the maximum of the nationwide 1,306 deaths. Gujarat comes second with 262 deaths, followed by Madhya Pradesh 156, Rajasthan 65, Delhi 64, Uttar Pradesh 43, and West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh 33 each. The death toll reached 29 in Tamil Nadu, 28 in Telangana, while Karnataka has reported 25 fatalities due to the deadly virus that causes serious respiratory ailments.

Punjab has registered 20 deaths, while Jammu & Kashmir has logged eight. Kerala, Bihar and Haryana have reported four deaths each.

Jharkhand has recorded three COVID-19 fatalities. Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Assam have reported one fatality each.

Of the total confirmed cases, Maharashtra has recorded the highest cases at 12,296, followed by Gujarat at 5,055, Delhi at 4,122, Madhya Pradesh at 2,846, Rajasthan at 2,772, Tamil Nadu at 2,757, Uttar Pradesh at 2,626, Andhra Pradesh at 1,583, Telangana at 1,063.

The West Bengal has recorded 922 cases, Punjab 772, Jammu & Kashmir 666, Karnataka 606, Kerala 500, Bihar 502 and Haryana 394. Punjab has not recorded any case in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Niti Aayog member VK Paul has assured that an increase in positive

cases is expected to stabilise sometime soon. “The rationale behind the government’s decision to extend the lockdown

by two more weeks after May 3 is to consolidate the gains of the first and second phase of restrictions,” Paul said.
