Death toll mounts to 160, total number of COVID-19 cases crosses 10,000-mark

NEW DELHI: The Coronaviru­s death toll in Delhi mounted to 160, while the total number of Covid-19 cases in the national capital crossed the 10,000-mark on Monday, authoritie­s said.

As many as 299 fresh cases were recorded while the total number of active cases stood at 5,409. In a bulletin issued on Monday, the Delhi Health department said that the death toll from Coronaviru­s infection has risen to 160, and the total number of cases has climbed to 10,054.

It, however, added that the cumulative death figures refer to fatalities where primary cause of death was found to be COVID-19, as per the report of the Death Audit Committee on the basis of case sheets received from various hospitals.

According to the data, 7,056 positive patients are below 50 years of age, 1,544 positive patients are between 50 to 60 years of age and remaining 1,454 patients are above 60 in age. As far as numbers of tests are concerned, the government has conducted 1, 39,272 tests till the last heath bulletin was released on Monday morning.

Number of containmen­t zones is still 76 hence neither addition nor removal has been made.

The national Capital has witnessed a surge of 1,000 Coronaviru­s cases in a span of just two days.

On Saturday, the city-state’s tally stood at 9,333 cases and 129 deaths linked to the highly contagious illness while on Sunday, the total number of cases stood at 9,755, including 148 deaths.

According to the data shared by the state, it took exactly a month for the number of cases to surge from 1,000 (on April 11) to 7,000 (on May 11).

The city has fourth highest number of Coronaviru­s patients in India after Maharashtr­a, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Delhi has to “learn to

live with Coronaviru­s,” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said more than once during his press conference­s.

On Sunday, as centre extended lockdown till May 31, the Delhi Chief Minister said that the new guidelines on the lockdown were “largely in

line with the proposal sent by the Delhi government.”
