BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda on Tuesday appointed Adesh Kumar Gupta as the new Delhi BJP president by replacing North East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari who had assumed office in 2016. “BJP president has appointed Adesh Gupta as new state unit president with immediate effect,” said a letter issued by Arun Singh, national general secretary of the party.

Gupta, a sitting councillor from West Patel Nagar and member of Standing Committee, was Mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation from April 2018 to April 2019. He is also a member of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) of Delhi government.

Manoj Tiwari, who holded the position for almost 3.5 years was facing criticism for poll debacle as the BJP got only eight seats in Delhi Assembly elections held in February this year. Party sources were claiming that the central leadership was also not happy with state unit’s role during COVID crisis and this might be a reason of his removal.

Reacting over the development, Delhi BJP said that replacement of BJP Delhi president is a process of organisational changes in BJP as MP Manoj Tiwari’s original term as Delhi BJP president was for 3 years from Nov 30, 2016 — Nov 30, 2019, he got landslide historic victory in 2017 MCD elections winning 181 seats out of 272 seats, and also won all 7 member of parliament seats in May 2019 — he himself defeated former CM Sheila Dixit from North east Delhi by 3.66 lakh votes. And he owned the defeat of Delhi Assembly very gracefully. The state unit welcome Adesh Kumar Gupta as Delhi BJP’S new president.

“I will always be grateful to all party workers, office bearers and residents of the city for their love and support during my 3.6 years’ tenure. I congratulate the newly elected president,” tweeted Manoj Tiwari.
