Nizamuddin Basti de-sealed after 70 days as no fresh case reported

NEW DELHI: After 70 days, Delhi’s Nizamudin Basti has been de-sealed and has been put out of the containmen­t zone.

On Sunday, an order was passed by the SDM declaring Nizamuddin Basti as non-containmen­t zone after no fresh case was reported from past 28 days.

Nizamuddin Basti was sealed after some of the Tablighi Jamaat members tested positive for COVID19. Top restrict the infecton to other areas Nizamuddin Basti was sealed on March 30 and declared a containmen­t zone.

The last case reported from the area was on May 5 where a woman was tested positive. She later died on May 12. After that no case of COVID-19 has been reported from the area.

The residents of the area also wrote many letters to the authoritie­s for the inspection of the area and de-seal it.

“Congratula­tions to all residents of Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti — after our repeated efforts — Hazrat Nizamudin Basti has been declared a Non Containmen­t zone — thanks to the SDM for this order which would be a big relief To all residents,” Yasmin Kidwai, Muncipal Councillor from the area said.

However, in another containmen­t zone Jahangirpu­ri which turned into the biggest hotspot in the city after detecting over 100 cases from various blocks and two of these blocks (B&C) were sealed at early stage, residents living here now want both the blocks de-contained.

Atleast 12 pockets/blocks have been sealed in the entire area which house nearly 22,000 families. They claim that they have been facing difficulty in their day to day life as they are not able to manage their routine life as duration of sealing has almost reached two months.

The residents, through their area councilor, have also raised voice before top authoritie­s in this regard. “We have written letters to the concerned District Magistrate (DM), Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor and are hopeful from their side,” said Ashwani Bagri, husband of councilor Poonam Bagri.

According to the residents, B-block was sealed on April 8 while C-block was sealed on April 10 and the residents

living in these two areas have been facing hardships since then.

“B-block (house no 1 to 1,000) had reported 27 cases till May 25 in which two names have been mentioned twice. Another positive patient’s name is included in the list while he is resident of G-block. Remaining patients have been discharged from hospitals. B-block (house no 1,001 to 1,900) had reported seven cases till May 25 out of which three patients do not

live here, one has been died while three have been recovered so far,” Bagri said.

“In C-block (house no 51 to 1,000), all members of a family in which more than 30 people were tested positive have been recovered except one who died earlier. A total of 50 cases were reported from this block till May 25 out of which 44 have been recovered, one has been died, three positive patients do not live in the area as their residence is in slum. Two others infected from the list do not live in the block hence areas should be de-sealed,” he claimed.
