India logs 14,821 fresh cases, death toll rises to 13,699

‘India’s cases per lakh population among lowest in world’

NEW DELHI: India continued to register over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases for the 11th day in a row as 14,821 new 19 cases have been added in the country’s total tally that pushed the infection count to 4,25,282, while the death toll rose to 13,699 with 445 new fatalities.

Notably, India’s COVID-19 cases per lakh people is one of the lowest in the world despite its high population density, the Union Health ministry said on Monday.

For every one lakh population, there are 30.04 Coronaviru­s cases in India, while the global average is over three times at 114.67, the ministry said, referring to the WHO Situation Report 153, dated June 21. With the recovery of 9,440 COVID19 patients in the last 24 hours, total 2,37,196 patients have been cured so far at the rate of 55.77 per cent, while there were 1,74,387 active cases.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has tested a total of 69,50,493 samples out of which 1,43,267 have been tested in the last 24 hours at its 985 testing centres.

Of the 445 fresh fatalities, 186 were from Maharashtr­a, 63 from Delhi, 53 from Tamil Nadu, 43 from Uttar Pradesh, 25 from Gujarat among others.

Of the total 13,699 deaths reported so far, Maharashtr­a accounted for the highest 6,170 fatalities, followed by Delhi with 2,175 deaths, Gujarat with 1,663 among others.

The highest number of cases has been reported by Maharashtr­a at 1,32,075, followed by Delhi at 59,746, Tamil Nadu at 59,377.
