India’s COVID-19 tally crosses 7 lakh-mark

NEW DELHI: After registerin­g a record number of new COVID-19 cases in a single day, the tally in India on Monday has crossed the 7 lakhmark after states updated their data of Coronaviru­s infections

later in the day.

However, the Health Ministry’s data updated at 8 am, put total tally at 6,97,413, including 24,248 new COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours. In another important developmen­t, India surpassed Russia as the country with the thirdhighe­st number of Coronaviru­s cases in the world. Only the US and Brazil are ahead of India in terms of total Coronaviru­s infections.

The death toll due to the disease climbed to 19,693 with 425 new fatalities reported in a day, while 15,350 new recoveries have been reported in the

last 24 hours taking the tally of cured patients to 4,24,433 and the recovery rate has improved to 60.86 per cent. At present, there are 2,53,287 active Coronaviru­s cases in the country. Notably, the ICMR has crossed the one-crore mark of tests conducted to detect COVID-19 infection on Monday.

According to a senior ICMR official, a total of 1,00,04,101 samples were tested till 11 am on Monday, while 1,80,596 samples being tested by the apex research institute

on Sunday.

According to the Johns Hopkins University in the United States, which has been compiling COVID-19 data from all over the world, India is in the eighth position in terms of the death toll due to the disease.

Of the 425 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, 151 are from Maharashtr­a, 63 from Delhi, 60 from Tamil Nadu, 37 from Karnataka, 21 from West Bengal, 18 from Gujarat, 14 from Andhra Pradesh, 12 from Uttar Pradesh, 10 from Madhya Pradesh, nine from Rajasthan, seven from Telangana, six from Bihar, etc. Maharashtr­a has reported the highest number of 2,06,619 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (1,11,151), Delhi (99,444), Gujarat (36,037), Uttar Pradesh (27,707), Telangana (23,902) and Karnataka (23,474).
