Four steps to a Digital transformation Journey

- - Jayesh Ghatge, Marketing Partner, ThoughtWorks India

First step to digital transformation is to understand the need for a change in mindset and company culture. While the digital vision should start from the top, all depts. need to work together to achieve it. The support structure must understand the need for IT and should not be wearing their traditional lens while buying stuff. Otherwise, no methodologies or tools will work. Everybody for instance, talks about the need to use Agile for transformation. While using Agile is important, it will not bring the required business agility if people’s mindset doesn’t change. IT team will continue bringing out great products, but nobody in marketing team will be able to sell them.

Second, look at how other companies are doing digital transformation. A few things we’ve seen companies working aggressively on are to improve customer engagement, business operations, and find the next revenue stream like an insurance company getting into wellness space and reaching a level where insurance will be just one more thing that they do.

Third, consistent visibility into the state of digital transformation in your company is important, for which you need dashboards and tools, with different levels of granularity for different stakeholders.

Fourth, is to identify the type of solutions that will suit you. Many companies already have investments sunk into a variety of apps. They should look for solutions like wrappers, which ‘wrap’ around their apps and expose only the data people need access to, while completely shielding the original app securely. A typical requirement could be a mobile app for customers, which requires access to data from your internal apps. For disruptors or leaders, a different type of platform is needed that allows them to experiment with different business models, while for companies who already have ideas on what they want to do, but don’t know where and how to start, they need a platform that helps build products.
