Techno Camon i4 Review

-

Budget segment smartphones have got much better feature updates in the past few years. Being the most popular category, most of the manufacturers targeting this segment. Hence, we have seen various budget smartphones with a great combination of camera, battery and processing units.

Tecno is raising the camera competition in the sub 10k segment by adding a triple camera phone – Tecno Camon i4. Not only camera, but it also gets the Dot Notch screen that helps it to stand out of the competition.

But is it the right device to go for? Read the full review to find out the answer.

Build Quality and Design

Tecno Camon i4 has a large 6.2-inch HD+ screen with 1520×720 Pixels resolution. The dot notch display got thin bezels on both sides; but, large at the bottom with a screen-to-body ratio of 88.6 per cent.

On the top of the screen, you can find a 16 MP selfie shooter. And above that, you can see the speaker grill. Though we have seen dot notch display in many devices but not in the budget segment.

The body of the phone is made out of durable plastic with round edges, offering a good grip when you hold it single-handedly.

The volume rocker and power buttons are placed on the right side. While the speaker, microUSB port, Mic and 3.5 mm jack are located at the bottom. On the left side, you can find a SIM tray that has space to add two SIM cards and one microSD slot to extend your phone memory.

At the back, it holds a triple camera along with LED flash. The setup is on the left side of the phone and at the centre, you can see the fingerprint sensor, which is easy to reach.

The back has got a glossy textured finish that looks awesome but works like a magnet to fingerprints. Thankfully, Tecno added a back cover to protect the shine of the device.

Display and Camera Performance

The 6.2-inch HD+ display supports brightness of 500 nits, meaning you can use the device even in direct sunlight. Tecno Camon i4 screen has wide viewing angles, enabling you to have fun with your friends and family while watching videos and playing games.

Tecno Camon i4 has 2MP+13MP+8MP triple camera set up along with LED flash which is the biggest highlight of the phone. The setup has 13-megapixel primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The camera app has ‘AI Cam’ to beautify images and produce better shots in various light conditions and modes.

Using the AI cam mode, it smartly manages to detect the right mode to capture shots but has a small flaw. Till the time you are steady, it will be able to choose the right mode, as we are human so that not possible every time, thus even a little shake, can lead switching to sport mode. This app flaw, end of choosing sport mode most of the times.

While using other modes in daylight, it captured images with a good amount of details. In macro shots, it managed to get separation between subjects and backgrounds. In the low light conditions, it was unable to focus automatically, we tap on the screen to fix the focus. The low light shots were fine with grains and missing details.

The front shooter is perfect to capture both selfie and groufies to share on social channels. The selfie camera does a good job but lacks details.

Performance

Tecno Camon i4 is available in three variants, we got 2GB RAM + 32GB internal storage variant for review. The phone powered with Helio A22 SoC, 2 GHz Cortex-A53 quad-core processor.

The configuration is good enough for some basic operations. We used the device for quite some time and found that it works perfectly with light apps and games. It can also manage multitasking, up to a level, but heavy games or app would lead to performance lag. We tried to add games like Asphalt and PUBG but it wasn’t able to keep up.

The phone has a powerful 3500 mAh battery that can last for more than a day with moderate usage which included social media, WhatsApp account, gaming, videos etc. Bottomline: Tecno tried to fire up the budget segment with its triple camera setup. It can capture decent images in daylight, and good with basic tasks, but lacks with heavy usage.
