Wedding Photography with GoPro
Magic Weavers team shows us how to use a GoPro action camera for unique perspectives
Fixing a ‘specialist’ tag on a device can sometimes hamper its proper utilisation, and GoPro is one such under-utilised device, thanks to the ‘action camera’ label that goes with it. However, there are a bunch of photographers who use GoPro cameras for professional photography and capture amazing perspectives. Smart Photography interacted with Magic Weavers to learn more about their work with GoPro devices. Here are some details they shared with us.
action/speciality cameras. The current generation GoPro Hero 8 is outstanding. The HyperSmooth 2.0 image stabilisation negates the use of gimbal for action shots and now we can easily give the cameras to our beautiful couples and let them shoot themselves and get cinematic footage. HyperSmooth now works in 4K, which is a boon as it gives us the resolution to crop and reframe the shot later if required. With the numerous mounts that GoPro has, and with the new design change where the camera can directly mount without the use of any case, shooting has become very very intuitive. The GoPro MAX is such an awesome camera and so easy to use that we have started using it in all our shoots. It gives a stitched 360 deg the app or in major editing systems on a computer. The battery life has improved much and the cameras have also become more rugged. Overall, the current generation GoPros are the best action cameras in the market and are actually more than action cameras for us now. The GoPro app lets us control the Hero 8 and MAX remotely, making it easy for us to mount the camera in places where we can’t access the camera to shoot or change the settings.
Use Case Scenarios
We started using the GoPro purely not as an action camera sometime in early 2019. Weddings mostly have rituals, which get too crowded and sometimes we don’t get space to stand and shoot with larger cameras. We could now use the smaller and almost nonintrusive GoPros wherever we wanted, especially during baraat, pheras and bidai. The MAX is now widely used in pheras and baraat to make tiny-planet type 360 degree shots which can capture the entire setup along with the people. We are still in the early stages of harnessing the true power of GoPro cameras outside the scope of an action camera to create dynamic unique content in weddings. The more we are using it, the more ideas keep coming to our minds to improvise and get better, newer and cooler shots. Since weddings are very very dynamic and chaotic, we do not always get what we want, but we are already in love with what we are getting out of these “tiny giants”.
