Dhyan Chand’s achieve­ments hailed

The Union Sports Min­is­ter and the Sports Au­thor­ity of In­dia, on Au­gust 29, hailed the achieve­ments of hockey leg­end Dhyan Chand at a func­tion at the Na­tional Sta­dium named af­ter him in New Delhi. Au­gust 29, Dhyan Chand’s birth­day, is cel­e­brated as the Na­tional Sports Day.

The func­tion was at­tended, among oth­ers, by Kar­nam Malleswari, weightlift­ing bronze medal­list in the 2000 Olympics; Harbinder Singh, three­time Olympic medal­list in hockey (1964, 196■ and 1972); MP Ganesh, hockey bronze medal­list in the 1972 Olympics; hockey Olympians Romeo James (19■4) and Devesh Chauhan (2000 and 2004) and former bad­minton star Man­jusha Kan­war.

SAI Direc­tor Gen­eral Nee­lam Ka­pur said, “What Dhyan Chand achieved back in the 1920s and 1930s is re­mem­bered even to­day. At SAI we have a huge re­spon­si­bil­ity to­wards In­dian sports. If we all work to­gether with full con­vic­tion, we can change many things for the bet­ter.”

Malleswari re­marked, “On the oc­ca­sion of Na­tional Sports Day, I con­grat­u­late all ath­letes who have won medals for In­dia at the Asian Games.”
