Dhyan Chand’s achievements hailed
The Union Sports Minister and the Sports Authority of India, on August 29, hailed the achievements of hockey legend Dhyan Chand at a function at the National Stadium named after him in New Delhi. August 29, Dhyan Chand’s birthday, is celebrated as the National Sports Day.
The function was attended, among others, by Karnam Malleswari, weightlifting bronze medallist in the 2000 Olympics; Harbinder Singh, threetime Olympic medallist in hockey (1964, 196■ and 1972); MP Ganesh, hockey bronze medallist in the 1972 Olympics; hockey Olympians Romeo James (19■4) and Devesh Chauhan (2000 and 2004) and former badminton star Manjusha Kanwar.

SAI Director General Neelam Kapur said, “What Dhyan Chand achieved back in the 1920s and 1930s is remembered even today. At SAI we have a huge responsibility towards Indian sports. If we all work together with full conviction, we can change many things for the better.”
Malleswari remarked, “On the occasion of National Sports Day, I congratulate all athletes who have won medals for India at the Asian Games.”
