Delhi turns saffron for Modi’s welcome

- CHARU NARULA and MOHIT SHARMA

Waiting for NaMo, the band outside the IGI airport played the popular Hindi song — Tumne mari entriyaan dil me baji ghan-tiyaan. As he stepped out, the sound of the band was drowned in the roar of “Modi Modi.” At a distance, a huge banner with Modi’s picture screamed — “Naya Yug, Naya Bharat ( New Age, New India).”

The man of the moment, Narendra Modi, arrived in the national capital on Saturday morning to a tumultuous welcome. He was received at the airport by a number of senior BJP leaders, including party chief Rajnath Singh. All along the route, saffron banners fluttered and petals were showered.

A sea of BJP supporters wearing saffron scarfs and Modi face masks greeted him with cheers and blowing of counch shells. Local leaders, including the party’s candidates who swept all the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, were also present at the airport.

The supporters became ecstatic as the PM- elect stepped out of the Terminal 3. It also brought the movement of other air passen- gers to a virtual halt as supporters thronged Mr Modi. A thunderous roar went up the air as Mr Modi, clad in grey khadi kurta and blue jacket, leaned out of the door of his SUV flashing a victory sign. For the SPG running beside his car, it was a security nightmare, as hundreds surged ahead to touch him. The saffron head count even surprised the security personnel. An unprecedented security cover was thrown all around Mr Modi. As Mr Modi convoy of about 250 cars and bikes passed through designated locations, supporters joined the brigade.
