Sonia & Rahul need not resign, says Assam CM

- MANOJ ANAND

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Saturday said that he was going to hand over his resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi soon but was not quitting politics.

Acknowledging that there was a Modi wave in Assam also, Mr Gogoi, however, asserted that there was no need for Mrs Gandhi and vice- president Rahul Gandhi to resign. “The contribution of the two Congress leaders for the country is immense. Their leadership was necessary to revive the party,” Mr Gogoi said, adding that their leadership has kept the party united. “I am of view that they worked hard for the victory of the party but they cant be held responsible for defeat,” he said, adding that victory and defeat is the part of democracy. Mr Gogoi also congratulated Gujarat CM Narendra Modi. “The people of Assam have also expressed confidence in the leadership of Mr Narendra Modi. We hope he will take note of the grievances of the state,” said Mr Gogoi, announcing that his government would extend all cooperation with the new government at the Centre.

Mr Gogoi also congratulated the seven BJP MPs in the state while reminding that their role would be sig- nificant in the coming days for the development of the state. Admitting that the defeat of the party in this Lok Sabha elections was certainly a matter of concern, Mr Gogoi said, “We never thought that the Congress would be reduced to three seats.” He said that the party failed to attract the new young voters.

Mr Gogoi, who will submit his resignation to the Congress president soon, said, “I don’t know if I will continue to be the chief minister or not, but my priority will be to strengthen the organisation and reach out to people who voted against us. We will try to find out the reasons that led to our defeat.”
