- TANVEER THAKUR

Everyone is talking about the surprising performance of AAP in Punjab which bagged 4 four seats out of total thirteen in the state. However, a look at vote share of the various parties would reveal some interesting facts and one of the most interesting facts is that is the Congress which got highest vote share of 33 per cent had ended with three seats and BJP with just eight percent vote share managed two seats.

The details of vote share has revealed that there was a huge undercurrent of anti- incumbency against Akalis in Punjab, perhaps what saved them a from a electoral pounding is that the anti- incumbency votes were divided between Congress and AAP.

The debutant AAP managed to get 24. 5 per cent vote share, just 1.9 per cent less than SAD which got 25.4 per cent votes, both parties equal number of four seats each. However, it is Congress which despite getting 33 per cent votes managed to win only 3 seats.

The combined vote share of BJP and Akali Dal is 34 per cent just above the Congress party’s vote share at 33 per cent. However the combined vote share of Congress and AAP sums up at whopping 58 per cent. The AAP has got substantial votes in almost all the parliamentary seats of the state. As happened in Anandpur Sahib constituency where Cabinet minister lost to SAD candidate by 23 thousand votes, Akali candidate was polled 3 lakh 47 thousand votes, whereas Ambika Soni was polled 3 lakh 23 thousand votes and AAP candidate was poled 3 lakh 4 thousand votes. As per the data the AAP has managed cut into seven per cent of the Congress votes in 2012 Assembly polls, whereas it has managed to 12 per cent of SAD’s vote since then 2012 assembly elections. However, the AAP has caused more damage to the Congress in terms of seats which were affected by the its vote share.

The AAP has also almost got 5 per cent vote share of PPP.
