Cong, BJP call for fresh elections

- PREETY ACHARYA

The Congress on Sunday made it very clear that it would not support the Aam Aadmi Party in forming the government in Delhi and would rather prefer fresh elections. A section of AAP MLAs had shown interest in government formation after their defeat in the Lok Sabha elections.

“There is no question of supporting AAP and these are all rumors that Congress is going to support them,” Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, president Arvinder Singh Lovely told this newspaper.

“The AAP has no moral right to talk about formation of government in Delhi again as they only approached the Supreme Court requesting dissolution of the Assembly and also demanded fresh election,” Delhi Congress chief spokesperson Mukesh Sharma said. The AAP managed to come on the second position on all the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi leaving behind sitting Congress MPs, including Union ministers Kapil Sibal and Krishna Tirath and party’s general secretary Ajay Maken, to the third position. “Now when the AAP has lost the Lok Sabha elections, they are again talking about government formation. We supported them so that the city could have a stable government but they disheartened the people,” Mr Sharma added.

In the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP swept all the seven seats and also were ahead in the 60 Assembly segments out of 70 seats. The AAP occupied top position only in 10 Assembly segments. As the NaMO tsunami has shocked many, local Congress leaders said that many AAP MLAs know tht they would be

washed away if they had to contest state elections. “That’s precisely why they want to forge an alliance with us to save their seats,” a Congress functionary said.

“Mr Kejriwal has been helping the saffron party. He ensured the BJP’s sweep in Delhi through division of secular votes. There is a possibility of some AAP MLAs defecting to the BJP,” Mr Sharma claimed.

The DPCC and its youth wing also held a meeting to introspect the party’s poor showing in the Parliamentary poll.

Meanwhile, after a spectacular show in the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP is also ready for fresh Assembly elections in Delhi. Party’s Delhi unit head Dr Harsh Vardhan, who won the prestigious Chandni Chow seat, said on Sunday that the saffron outfit was ready to go for a fresh poll “anytime.” Dr Harshvardhan, who was the party’s chief ministerial candidate in December, exuded confidence of getting a clear majority in the fresh poll.

The party leader categorically made it clear that the BJP would not try to form a government in Delhi by resorting to any sort of “manipulation” and would wait for election to get a “clear mandate” to rule the city.

“We are ready for a fresh election for the legislative assembly. I think election should be held at the earliest. I am confident that people of Delhi will give us a clear majority,” he said.
