Pallavi to play a tamasha dancer in her next

- ADITI PANCHOLI

Ever since she was three, she loved to perform Bharatnatyam in front of her audience. Although actress Pallavi Sharda spent a large part of her formative years in Australia, films and acting had always been a part of her longcherished dreams. So much so, that inspite of studying law and being a broadcast journalist for some time, Pallavi decided to give it all up and pursue a career in mainstream Bollywood. The actress is gradually making her presence felt in the industry. She is excited to exhibit her dancing skills in her next project Bambai Fairytale.

Elaborating on the film, she says, “The film is based on the life of a famous scientist Shivkar Bapuji Talpade and I am playing the love Interest of Ayushmann Khurana in the movie. My character is that of a tamasha dancer of 80’ s and 90’ s, so it was interesting going back into time and getting into the character. Tamasha is a traditional form of Marathi theatre and often involves singing and dancing. But my character is not archaic and we tried making it as earthy and contemporary as possible.”

Pallavi, who trained in Bharatnatyam for over 15 years, talks about her inspirations: “Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi are the actresses I grew up on and who made me want to act, mainly because they are such brilliant dancers. They made me believe that Bollywood is a place where I could lose myself in dance and different characters, two things that I have always loved. Madhubala and Vyjayanthimala are favourites from my father’s era.”

Directed by debut filmmaker Vibhu Puri, the film narrates the journey of the legendary scientist who constructed and flew India’s first unmanned airplane in 1895. The film is being shot in Gondol, a little town in Gujarat and parts of Mumbai. Vicky Donor star Ayushmann Khurrana is playing Bapuji Talpade in this period film. “He is a fabulous actor and Vicky Donor is one of the films which we like to watch when my family gets together in Australia. He is a simple and a likeable guy and has been a joy to work with him. We are wrapping up the film now.”

After shifting base to Mumbai, Pallavi was first spotted by Karan Johar and got a dream start as a cameo in the Shah Rukh Khan- starrer My Name is Khan . Soon after, she went on to play the leading role opposite Manoj Bajpai in Dus Tola and was last spotted in a role opposite Ranbir Singh’s Besharam.

Sharing about her upcoming projects, Pallavi, who is also a law graduate informs, “I am working for an Australian project, which is based on Helen Garner’s much discussed book Joe Cinque’s Consolation- A True Story of Death, Grief and The Law. I will be playing Anu Singh, an Australian girl of Indian descent who, in 1997, while a law student, killed her boyfriend.”
