Art gets a new twist
Artist Sarath K. S. is working on a new concept called “twoway art” that incorporates sounds into paintings to give them new meaning
What you see might just be an illusion created by the context that you see it in. If the context changes, the whole sight might take a different meaning altogether. Artist Sarath K. S. deals with this very idea. Showcasing around 30 oilon- canvas paintings created over last six years, his solo exhibition titled “Rush of Life” opens on May 23 at Art Spice Gallery.
“All the canvases show people in action, and that’s why the title. Apart from my recent works on display, there are also some paintings that I made as long back as 20082009,” says Sarath.
On display will be some large works of 5’ x4.5’ along with some of his smaller ones. Sarath shares that there are different processes through which he approaches them. “I have to properly plan everything before starting any large painting. But for smaller ones, I don’t construct the whole idea, but proceed step- by- step. First a single image is created and then, other objects. And finally relation between them is establ i shed. But while work

ing on a big idea, which naturally requires a larger canvas, it’s important to first construct everything in your mind. Else you might not be able to convey the exact idea that you want to,” he says.
One striking aspect of Sarath’s work is that you see children in almost every painting. He elaborates, “I like to use children to express an idea. I feel more comfortable in doing it and it is also more effective to evoke a strong response from the audience. I feel the viewer feels more empathetic to a child than to an adult.” For his next exhibition, Sarath is working on a new concept called “two- way art”. “In every artwork, there’s a subject and an idea. But if I introduce a new element to the painting, the subject changes. One form of this is the “sound art”. You look at a painting and you grasp its idea. But when a sound is introduced into the surrounding, the whole idea changes right in front of your eyes and you see it in a different light. I plan to showcase these works in my next exhibition,” ends Sarath.
