New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday appointed BJP leader and RS MP Kaptan Singh Solanki as the new governor of Haryana. The move is expected boost the
BJP in ending the row in the state after the creation
of a separate SGPC.
President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday appointed senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kaptan Singh Solanki as the new governor of Haryana. The move is expected to give a shot in the arm to the efforts of the BJP government to end the impending constitutional crisis facing the state following the controverisal legislation passed by the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government for the creation of a separate SGPC for Haryana.
Incumbent Haryana governor Jagannath Pahadia retires from his gubernatorial post on Saturday. Pahadia had been in the middle of the controversy as he was backing the controverisal legislation of the Congress- led state government.
Without wasting any time, the Union home ministry on Friday set the ball rolling for the new appointment to the Haryana Raj Bhavan. The first task for the new governor would be to end the “Centre- state logjam’’ over the issue, top sources disclosed.
There is also a move in the offing for changes in other Raj Bhavans soon thereafter.
Sources revealed that the Union home ministry, which has been considering ways to end the Centre- state logjam, had been mulling recommending Mr Pahadia’s removal from the gubernatorial post soon after he had refused to revoke the law passed by the state assembly despite the Centre’s directive.
But the move fell through midway and the central political leadership decided to wait for the completion of his term, top sources revealed. Mr Pahadia had taken charge of Haryana Raj Bhawan on July 27, 2009. As the Centre is now hoping for the crisis to blow over soon with the backing of the new governor, various options are under consideration including sending a Presidential reference to annul the Haryana legislation. On Friday, Punjab Deputy chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal ( SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal met Union home minister Rajnath Singh and defence minister Arun Jaitley in the capital once again appealing to the Centre to intervene.
The appointment gains significance as Haryana goes to Assembly polls later this year
