Jaswant has surgery, remains on life support

New Delhi: Former BJP leader Jaswant Singh was operated upon but is still on life support systems and in a coma at the Army Hospital in the capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the hospital on Saturday evening to enquire about the veteran leader’s health. US secretary of defence Chuck Hagel also said “our thoughts are with Jaswant Singh”, and hailed him as a “distinguis­hed soldier-statesman who helped transform Indo- US ties”.

Former BJP leader Jaswant Singh was operated upon but is still on life support systems and in a coma at the Army Hospital ( Research & Referral) in the capital. The former defence minister was admitted to the hospital with an head injury at about 1 am on Friday after his “family members had brought him to the hospital after finding him lying on the floor of the house in an unconsciou­s state”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the hospital on Saturday evening to enquire about the veteran leader’s health. US secretary of defence Chuck Hagel also said “our thoughts are with Jaswant Singh”, and hailed him as a “distinguis­hed soldiersta­tesman who helped transform Indo- US ties”.

“Former defence minister Jaswant Singh is still on life support system and under constant monitoring by a team of neurosurge­ons and critical care intensivis­ts at Army Hospital ( Research & Referral). His vital parameters are stable but he continues to be in coma,” the ministry of defence said. Defence sources said Mr Singh, 76, had been operated upon. The government had said on Friday that Mr Singh is in a “highly critical” condition. Mr. Singh, a former external affairs and finance minister, was expelled from the BJP early this year.
