Maha BJP sure of Assembly poll win

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

Strong anti- incumbency and the Narendra Modi card would bring the BJP and Shiv Sena back to power in Maharashtra under the banner of a “grand alliance”. This is the assessment of the Maharashtra BJP ahead of the state Assembly polls.

According to BJP leaders, the anti- incumbency against the ruling Congress- NCP’s ministers and legislators and the Modi factor would work to their advantage in the Assembly election, which is going to be a “do or die” battle for the CongressNCP and BJP- Shiv Sena.

The one- party ( NDA) rule at the Centre and in the state will be in the interest of Maharashtra, they said, adding that the election campaign could be built on this line.

Party leaders feel many ministers in the state, if fielded by the Congress and NCP, would be defeated just as in the 1995 Assembly election; that time, heavyweights and chief ministerial aspirants in the Congress were defeated.

Asked whether the Congress- NCP’s Maratha, minorities and dalit card would help it retain power for a record fourth successive time, they said Maratha votes have already been split because power has been confined to some Maratha families. They have emerged powerful due to political power and created empires of their own in the coopera- tive sector, education, banks and the construction business.

When pointed out that institutions like sugar factories, educational establishments running professional courses and district cooperative banks have been strongholds of the Congress- NCP, besides caste combinations, they said this strength has disconnected them from the common people for the simple reason that they have become a “moneymaking business”.
