The Delhi Congress on Saturday honoured freedom fighters Master Sarup Singh and Shaukat Ali Hashmi on the occasion of the anniversary of Quit India Movement at Chandni Chowk. Large numbers of Congress leaders, including DPCC president Arvinder Singh Lovely and CLP leader Haroon Yusuf, and party supporters took part in the function.

On this day in 1942, Mahatma Gandhi launched a mass civic disobedience for the independence of India.

Remembering the freedom fighters, Congress leaders spoke about the about the role of their party in the country’s independence. Senior leaders, like Jagdish Tytler and a large number of municipal councillors, Youth Congress leaders and NSUI workers also took part in the function.

“We have gathered here to honour those because of whom we are living in a free country,” said Mr Lovely. Lakhs of people had come out on the streets at the exhortation of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Delhi Congress also targeted the BJP- led Central government and claimed that it has failed to protect the safety and security of women. “The Union home ministry, headed by Rajnath Singh, has not only failed to prevent crime against women, as attacks on women have been on the rise, including rape incidents,” claimed Mr Lovely.

Mr Lovely raised the issue of women safety while addressing a seminar organised by the Mahila Vikas Manch on the topic “Balatkar Ko Rokne Me Samaj Ki Bhoomika” at the Constitution Club. “Before the Parliamentary elections, the BJP had put up huge hoardings ensuring the protection of women, but the BJP- led Central government was now working against its own promises,” alleged Mr Lovely. He also raised the issue of helpline which was started to help out women, but have been shut down.
