Smart City has been the key focus for the BJP government’s plan for urban development countrywide. Taking a cue from the it, the New Delhi Municipal Council has come up with its own projects to make area under its jurisdiction a “smart” and “green” zone.

The NDMC has already put up screens and monitors in most of its buildings to access weather and pollution scenario.

Speaking to this newspaper, senior official O. P. Mishra, who is heading the project department of the NDMC, said that the civic body aims to make things easier for its residents. “We are aiming that most of the services will be available online and the Lutyens’ area will have all the facilities of a smart city. In order to conserve energy, we have already installed weather and pollution monitors with LED display in some of the NDMC buildings,” he said.

The council is also working on it ambitious project of rooftop solar panels. “We have identified around 40 such locations. We have not disclosed the locations as of now, but these will be NDMC- owned buildings itself. Tenders have been invited for the same,” added Mr Mishra.

The other smart services also include online billing system.

Another project which the council hopes will change the face of the area are the small- scale waste to energy plants. “The waste to energy plant doesn’t require much space. We have floated a tender for the same as well.”

The green initiative will cut down the transportation cost of waste.

The council feels it will require more than 5 years before the Lutyens’ becomes a “smart zone.”

Recently the council had also taken most of its projects online.

The NDMC had also come up with an app to receive complaints from the residents of the area.
