DRONE DELIVERY IS HERE TO STAY

Google X revealed its secret project that it has been testing for the last two years in Australia

Google never fails to come up with interesting stuff at frequent intervals, and its latest project that has come to light is no different. The company revealed that it has been developing a drone delivery system, codenamed Project Wing, in the Australian outback.

In a video released last Thursday on YouTube, Google stated that it is developing ‘ a delivery system that uses self- flying vehicles’. The test runs have resulted in a reliable system that is capable of autonomous delivery, having successfully delivered a first- aid kit, candy bars, dog treats and water to some farmers.

Nicholas Roy, founder of Project Wing, said the company has been secretly working on the project for two years at Google X, a division of Google dedicated to major technological advancements. “We’re only just beginning to develop the technology to make a safe delivery system possible, but we think that there’s tremendous potential to transport goods more quickly, safely and efficiently,” Google wrote on YouTube.

The first non- Google employee to receive a delivery via Google drone was Australian farmer Neil Parfitt from Queensland. He received a Cherry Ripe chocolate bar, for which he would normally need to drive 10km into town just to purchase it. During the test flight shown in the video, Parfitt’s dog also gets treated with dog food.

So far, the team participated in over 30 test flights in Australia, which was picked as an ideal location due to its rolling hills, open sky and long standing history of innovation with unmanned aerial vehicles ( UAVs). The company plans on taking the momentum and enthusiasm to drive it towards enabling the dream of delivering stuff more quickly and safely. Looks like it won’t be long before manual delivery might be a thing of the past!
