Sweeping statement

Short might be sexy, but fashion this season is enjoying its affair with long, flowy, floor- grazing maxi dresses, long skirts and anarkalis The feminine magic works best in fluid silhouettes

It’s the season of long fashion statements as hemlines go to ground and floorgrazing dresses sweep down the runway and rule the closet. Only this time, the long sessions in style are taking a casual turn.

“The feminine magic works best in fluid silhouettes. Maxi has been a summer favourite for the last few years. And it is still going strong. From casual Hawaiian prints to embellished ones, they find many takers. And who would have thought Spring/ Summer 2014 will be a season of long skirts? The long skirt, both in the flowy form and pencil thin shape, took many by surprise. And instead of trousers, women happily took pencil skirts to the boardroom , ” says designer Mandira Wirk. MAXI ANARKALI While maxis and long skirts were basking in the summer fashion sun, the piece de resistance proved to be the maxi- like anarkali kameez. “Certainly it has class written all over it. Like most Indian attires, the maxi anarkali compliments all frames, while ensuring an elegant look that’s associated with a conventional gown,” says designer Sakshee Pradhan. “Right now it’s standing out in a league of its own in the trousseau category. It’s giving stiff competition to the traditional lehenga and the evergreen sari,” she adds.

For the perfect anarkali look, Sakshi suggests, “Its charm comes out best as formal wear. Remember to settle for solid colours, preferably in contrasts. However, it’s a good idea to avoid prints. The shade card that suits this style best is deep rich tones and pastel shades. Since the anarkali comes well embellished, going accessories free is a smart move.” THE GOOD OL’ MAXI

Designer Nidhi Munim is completely besotted with the maxi dress. She says, “The floor- length maxi has become a wardrobe staple for an easygoing look. Nothing says style better than a sunset orange maxi worn with nude wedges. Cut- outs at the back, neck and waist not only accentuate your best features but also add length to your silhouette. Maxi skirts have also made a big comeback. Go for a sporty vibe by pairing a nude maxi skirt with a graphic tee and a varsity jacket.” LONG SKIRT Designer Ekta Dhingra feels the tea- length skirt is the ultimate catch of the season. “They stand out in a crowd of maxis,” she says, adding that it is the ankle- length skirts that have proved to be a big draw. “Opt for flares that allow an easygoing feel, or for a more chic appearance go for straight fits. At the moment, I prefer tea cup prints and playing with different stripe patterns. And nothing is looking more attractive than monochromes,” she concludes.
