Wimbledon champ joins Navratilova
The 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli will join Martina Navratilova and Tracy Austin in the four- player field of the WTA Legends event in Singapore in October, the Women’s Tennis Association said on Monday.
The 29- year- old French star, a winner of eight singles titles, once ranked as high as seven in the world. She will be among the four legends featuring in the inaugural Legends tournament at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore between October 17 and 26 this year.
“During
my
playing career I had the honour of competing in the WTA Finals at Madrid and Istanbul, so I can’t wait to see what Singapore has in store to take our season finale to new heights,” said Bartoli. “It will be a chance to relive memories and also make new ones, and I’m sure I speak for the other legends when I say we’ll all be in it to win it!”
“An inspirational champion who played her last match on the WTA barely a year ago, Marion is a wonderful ambassador for women’s tennis who continues to give so much back to the game,” said Stacey Allaster, WTA chairman and chief executive.
In addition to capturing Wimbledon 2013 with victory over Sabine Lisicki in the final, Bartoli reached the title match at the All England Club in 2007, defeating world no. 1 Justine Henin in the semis before finishing runner- up to Venus Williams.
