School Cycle League a big hit

A novel School Cycling League initiative in the capital on Sunday drew good response, with 700 children from 60 schools along with over 300 parents, teachers and enthusiast­s joining in.

The inaugural edition of the Avon Cycles Dwarka School Cycling League — organised under the aegis of the Cycling Federation of India and with St Mary’s School, Dwarka as the school partner — sought to spread awareness for a cleaner environmen­t and also try and identify talent with an eye on the 2020 Olympics.

Shivangi Tiwari, a XIth stan- dard student of Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, New Delhi, and Aryun Verma of Paramount School, Dwarka, clinched the top spots in the senior girls’ and boys’ category in a keenly- contested race that saw competitio­n held in three age categories ( U- 13, U- 16 and U18). There was a race for the special children as well.

CFI secretary general Onkar Singh said, “This initiative was undertaken with a hope of searching for young talent and I am happy to say that we are heading in the right direction. We plan to organise more such event not only in Delhi but also across the country to reach out to the right talent pool.”

The fun ride saw near about 300 teachers, parents and cycling enthusiast­s joining the students in spreading green awareness and save fossil fuels.

The league plans to conduct similar events in the Delhi and NCR region in a zone wise format and then spread the concept nationally.
