1st all- women team scales Himalaya peak

New Delhi: The seven- member girl guides’ mountainee­ring expedition climbed up 22,420 ft. Mrigthuni Peak in the Western Himalaya on October 10, according to telephonic informatio­n received here today at the National headquarte­rs of the Bharat Scouts and Guides.

All the members of the expedition are safe and on their way back.

The expedition has already reached Lata in the plains, which is less than day’s walk from Joshimath from where it started the trek on September 25.

The expedition is expected to come back in Delhi on October 25.

The message received from the Moradabad police authoritie­s today suggested that the team of porters accompanyi­ng the expedition deserted on the way and the U. P. police had to arrange for new porters.

The help of the U. P. police was sought by the National headquarte­rs late last week when it was found that the team for some time. The last letter from the leader of the delegation was from Lata Kharak dated September 26.

In that letter, the leader, Mrs Joyce Dunsheath, had stated that the expedition was stalled due to bad weather and behind schedule by one week. According to the original programme, the expedition was also to climb the peak “Trishul” ( 23.360 ft) .

The message received today made no mention about it. The message said the porters deserted the expedition after it had climbed the peak and their return journey was delayed by about a week.
