7 get death in Rohtak gangrape, murder
A local court in Rohtak has awarded the death penalty to all seven convicted in the gangrape- cum- murder case of a Nepalese woman. Besides, they were sentenced under Section 376 D ( gangrape) and awarded life imprisonment for remaining part of their life.
The court put the case in the “rarest of the rare” category while awarding the sentence. The eighth accused in the case, who hails from Nepal, is a minor and his trial is underway in a juvenile court, while another accused had allegedly committed suicide. Barring the juvenile accused, all others belong to Gaddi Kheri village in Rohtak district. After being raped, the victim was allegedly subjected to inhuman torture and brutality. The victim, who had come from Nepal to her sister’s place for psychiatric treatment, had gone missing on February 1 this year.
Her naked body was found at Bahu Akbarpur village in Rohtak district on February 4. One of the accused, Sombir ( 22), who was absconding, had committed suicide in Delhi’s Bawana area soon after the arrests were made. The men had confessed that they first took turns to rape the woman and when she fell unconscious they attacked her with bricks, killing her.
The victim’s post- mortem report said she was brutally raped and physically tortured before her death.
The judge while giving the order said, “Women refuse to accept the names Nirbhaya and Damini given to them, reasoning that they should not be denied their identity. How many times Nirbhaya would die. Nobody has a right to take away our individuality.”
