Salman skips women’s panel, sends letter
Actor Salman Khan on Thursday failed to appear before the Maharashtra State Commission for Women ( MSCW) for the third time. However, he sent a letter ( the contents of which are unknown) to the panel in response to the summons issued to him over his “rape” remark.
The MSCW, which had asked Khan to appear before it on Thursday, said it is consulting its legal department regarding the actor’s letter. “We have received the letter. We are studying it now. We have sent it to our legal department and will decide the future course of action,” MSCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar told reporters. She, however, did not reveal the content of the letter. After Khan skipped his first personal appearance before the panel, it summoned the actor to appear before it on July 7, which coincided with Id.
The actor had sent a letter to MSCW in the first week of July via his lawyer stating that the National Commission for Women ( NCW) was already hearing the case and the matter couldn’t be heard simultaneously at two places. After considering his response, the panel had expressed dissatisfaction over the actor’s argument and summoned him to appear before it on July 7, which he didn’t.
Khan, in one of his interviews for the promotion of the movie Sultan, had said he “felt like a raped woman” when shooting for a fight scene. The film centres on wrestling. The comment drew flak from all sections of society, with the NCW demanding an apology for the same within seven days. Salim Khan, Khan’s father and a wellknown screenwriter, immediately apologised on behalf of his son on Twitter. However, Khan has not reacted to the row over the remark. Salman on July 8 had also defied the NCW’s summons and did not appear before it to clarify his remark.
