No housing for Delhi cops, only 18.71% get flats

- SANJAY KAW and ATUL KRISHAN NEW DELHI, JULY 14

The Delhi police, responsible for maintaining law and order in the city, has been unsuccessful in providing official accommodation to its personnel.

Some 84,536 city police employees are entitled to official accommodation, but the Central government has been able to provide only 15,818 flats to the police personnel, which on an average works out to about 18.71 per cent of the total requirement.

In the Type- VI category of accommodation provided to the police commissioner, special commissioners, joint commissioners and additional commissioner, the force requires a total of 50 flats. However, there are just five flats have been allocated to the police in this category.

For the Type- V category, the police has been able to meet 86.79 per cent of the total requirement. This category covers accommodation for police officers of the rank of DCPs. Of the total of 53 eligible officers, Type- V flats have been allocated to 46 so far. In the Type- IV category, allocated to additional DCPs and ACPs, only 248 of the 402 officers have been provided government accommodation.

The worst affected category is that of constables, entitled to Type- I flats. Of the total requirement of 49,001 flats, only 5,224 have been allocated.

Under Type- II category, only 8,672 of the head constables and assistant subinspectors enjoy the government accommodation of the total of 27,569 eligible for the flats. Of the 7,461 inspectors, only 21.75 per cent have been provided with Type- III flats.

Construction of the new police headquarters at Parliament Street, approved by the NDMC in January, is expected to be completed in another two years. The construction of the new 17- storey PHQ with a six- storey residential block by Ms/ Unity Infra Projects Ltd is expected to be completed in next two years. The foundation stone laying ceremony of the new building was held on February 16.

Some 1,984 staff quarters are under construction under the Delhi Police Building Programme. The construction work on 188 flats has been completed and they have been handed over.

The police report said it would take about two years to get the construction of 4,856 flats at Dheer Pur under the public private partnership ( PPP) project with Ms/ Punj Llyod.

Once the project is completed, housing satisfaction level of the force is going to increase to 28 per cent by the end of the 12th Five Year Plan ( 2012- 17).
