City chokes again: Rain leads to jams, waterloggi­ng

A fresh spell of rain on Thursday led to waterloggi­ng in different parts of the city, bringing traffic to a halt.

Rains lashed several parts of the city bringing down the mercury marginally, even though the high humidity levels caused discomfort to Delhiites.

Commuters in and around south and east Delhi were stuck in gridlocks for hours as waterloggi­ng was reported at Saket, Chirag Delhi, Greater Kailash, Khanpur, Sainik Farms, South Extension, Ashram, Moti Bagh, Shahdara and Vikas Marg, a traffic official said.

The major stretches in south Delhi which were severely clogged included the Mehrauli- Badarpur road, BRT corridor and the Outer Ring Road stretch covering Panchsheel, IITDelhi, Munirka and Vasant Vihar.

Traffic flow was obstructed at Rajdhani Park, Sarai Kale Khan, Ashram flyover, Savitri Cinema, Khanpur, M. B. Road, Outer Ring Road, Punjabi Bagh and Inner Ring road

Waterloggi­ng was also reported in many areas, including Rajouri Garden, Shahdara, Jheel, Narayana, Mayapuri and Chirag Dilli, leading to traffic snarl.

Waterloggi­ng was mostly spotted at the mouth of flyovers and underpasse­s.

The worst hit were the Zakhira and Punjabi Bagh flyovers and the Moolchand underpass, giving a harrowing time to commuters in the peak evening hours.

A long tailback was also reported in west and north Delhi areas, including Mayapuri, Naraina, Punjabi Bagh, Boulevard Road, Wazirabad, Jahangirpu­ri and Adarsh Nagar, the official said.

Safdarjung observator­y recorded 15 mm of rainfall till 5.30 pm. Palam observator­y recorded 3 mm of rainfall, Lodhi Road 6.4 mm and Ridge 22.2 mm, said a met department official.
