After the intervention of Balasore district collector Promod Das, the government railway police ( GRP) on Saturday suspended assistant sub- inspector Pratap Rudra Mishra for breaking a dead woman’s body into pieces to pack it into a bag.

Mishra had allegedly asked two sweepers of the health department to break the body of Taramani Nayak, an 85- year- old woman who was killed at Soro on Wednesday in a train accident, to stuff the body into a gunny bag and carry it on a bamboo pole to the district headquarters hospital for post- mortem.

GRP superintendent of police Sanjaya Singh suspended the ASI just an hour after the collector asked for strong action against the errant police officer.

Collector Pramod Das on Saturday revealed at a press conference in Balasore that the GRP submitted a detailed report on the incident to the district administration in which it has confessed to having committed the blunder that smacks of gross insensitivity towards the dead.

While a special GRP team has gone to the Soro hospital to carry out an investigation into the matter, the rights panel issued summons to the inspector general of railway police and the district collector.
