Army will supervise project, says Sonowal

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday said that ministry of home affairs has agreed to handover the supervisio­n of constructi­on of fencing along IndoBangla­desh border to the Army.

Pointing out that the Assam government had written a letter to the ministry in this regard, Mr Sonowal told reporters, “I met Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday and discussed various issues related to the state. The home minister has agreed to handover the supervisio­n of fencing work on border to the Army.”

Mr Sarbananda Sonowal said, “I apprised him the status of National Register of Citizens updation process and also requested him for additional financial assistance to complete the process.”

Mr Sonowal said that home ministry has also agreed to grant extension to 64 foreigners tribunals with retrospect­ive effect.

Pointing out that extension to foreigners tribunal would help in intensifyi­ng the detection and deportatio­n of illegal immigrants, chief minister Sonowal said that his government was determined to complete the ongoing work of updating the National Register of Citizens.
