‘Love triangle’ leads to firing in South Delhi

An alleged love triangle was the result of shooting at the NCUI campus in South Delhi on Saturday night.

The victim, her former husband, and her boyfriend were reported injured in the said shooting. All are undergoing treatment at the AIIMS trauma centre.

The woman, Janmoni Dutta, has told the police that her boyfriend Kajal Jatin Sarkar had pulled out a pistol in a fit of rage and shot her and her former husband Rajender. He then panicked and shot himself. A PCR van passing by had heard the gunshots and received an SOS call from another youth, accompanyi­ng the shooter, and the trio were admitted to a hospital.

Ms Dutta had arrived in Delhi from Dibrugarh a month back to pursue a diploma course in cooperativ­e management. She has told the police that she had married Rajender at a temple in 2009. However, the couple had fallen out in 2011. Rajender worked at a private firm in North Bengal. Ms Dutta had shifted to Delhi a month back and changed her contact number to avoid talking to him. Ms Dutta claimed that Rajender had tried to contact her several times, but she had refused to meet him. months. In fact, Sarkar had persuaded to her to take up the course at the NCUI in Delhi while he joined a call centre of a telecom company. On Saturday, he had taken her for dinner at a South Delhi eatery in his i10 car. On Saturday, Rajender arrived in Delhi on a flight and reached the institute hostel unannounce­d to meet Ms Dutta. “I was supposed to travel to Agra with my colleagues, but had stayed back due to some personal reasons. Later, in the evening, I had gone out with Sarkar to have dinner when someone told me that a person had arrived from my hometown,” said Ms Dutta.

Rajender confronted Ms Dutta and Mr Sarkar at a park outside the hostel when he saw them entering together. Police officers said that a heated argument broke out between the three during which Sarkar pulled out a pistol and shot Rajender in a fit of rage. When Dutta tried to intervene, Sarkar opened fire at her as well. Fearing that he might get caught, Sarkar shot himself in the chest.

Probe revealed that Sarkar had carried a licensed pistol owned by his father Jatin Sarkar, who is in the CISF.
