A BETTER OPTION

The chief minister of a state has reportedly given a `5-crore offering to propitiate the deity residing in the worldfamous temple in the state ruled by his party. The gentleman, a devout Hindu himself, doesn’t seem to understand the true meaning of religious teachings. God would have been extremely pleased and would have showered His blessings on him if he had donated the same amount to build a small hospital for poor patients in the state, or created a corpus fund for the benefit of poor and deserving students of the state. GIFT ELECTRONICALLY

IN THE WAKE of the demonetisation move, the Central government is encouraging payments to be made through electronic means in order to check corruption and black money. One wonders whether, at weddings, instead of the friends and relatives of the bride and groom gifting cash in covers or envelopes (called “Moi” Panam in Tamil), they could instead use electronic methods to transfer money to the bank accounts of the newlyweds, details of which could be provided in the wedding card itself.

WAITING FOR AUSSIES

WITH REFERENCE TO the report

“Respect for Rivals” (Feb. 22), in the first Test series against Australia under Virat Kohli’s captaincy in the subcontinent, both teams are determined to do well. While it is safe to say India are playing very well at the moment and are a very settled side, and Australian lost their indomitable aura a long time ago in the subcontinent and haven’t won a Test in India since clinching a historic victory in 2004, the Aussie cricketers will give a run for their money. Let’s see how the cookie crumbles in this big-ticket series.
