The national capital has been put on high alert on Friday ahead of Holi and the impending election results of five states.
Police sources said that with the arrest of alleged terrorists in the neighbouring states of UP and MP, all police stations have been asked to be on alert and to keep an eye on any suspicious movement.
“It is a general alert ahead of the festival. Also, the election results are due on Saturday when most market places will be crowded. We have asked all station house officers to patrol the markets and use loud speakers to ask the shoppers to keep an eye on suspicious objects in or near their shops,” said a senior police official.
Security has been beefed up around the Parliament and all other important installations. The police in the adjoining areas of Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram have also been asked to keep a tight vigil.
The Delhi traffic police has made elaborate arrangements to check drunken driving, over-speeding, and other traffic violations by revellers on the occasion of Holi on March 13.
“Special checking teams with alcometers have been
deployed at major intersections and vulnerable points to detect and prosecute traffic violations. In case of drunken driving, besides prosecution, the drivers are liable to be arrested and their vehicles impounded,” said Garima Bhatnagar, the joint commissioner of (traffic) police.
More than 200 special checking teams of the traffic police, along with PCR vans and local police, have been deployed this time to check incidents of drink and drive, speeding, and reckless driving. Special teams with alcometers and 20 interceptors will also be deployed at major intersections.
“Cops will not only ensure safety of the motorists, but will also keep a check on incidents of drunken driving, over-speeding, reckless driving, and other offences,” she said.
