Old notes worth `6cr seized, 4 arrested

The Delhi police has arrested four people and seized `6.18 crore in old currency from their possession, a police official said on Wednesday.

According to the police, the currency was seized following a tip-off received by a team about movement of old currency in two cars from West Delhi to South Delhi.

“A police team stopped a Ritz and Honda City car near Safdurjung Market at 9 pm on Tuesday. During a search, one bag each was recovered from both the cars. Both the bags contained old `500 and `1,000 notes. All of the persons in possession of the money were detained,” said a police official.

The police counted the currency in denominati­ons of `1,000 and `500, bringing the total value of the currency to `6.18 crore.

The arrested persons have been identified as Surrender Goel, Sachin Kumar, Shiv Kumar and Rajiv. All the accused deal in property and are residents of various localities in West Delhi. They have been charged with Section 41 (1)(D) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

During questionin­g, the accused told the police that they were on their way to a shop in Safdurjung Market to exchange the money.
