Twin set outfits, co-ords or matching separates — these outfits are taking over the runway this season and are being sported by a number of celebrities as well. Being too ‘matchy matchy’ is a thing of the past. The look is also quite versatile and leaves space for experimentation of patterns, prints cuts and solid colours. Other trends almost seem mundane now as compared to this vintageinspired look which gives off a fun and fresh vibe while easily fits into any woman’s closet!
With a mix of easy-breezy yet stylish dressing these matching sets in the combination of crop tops with midis, skirts, shorts, palazzos and even professional dressing are an easy pick for designer Tahera Peeran. “I love this 70s trend and think the versatility makes it unique and gives the extra edge. A set of matching separates can give so much symmetry and consolidation to the entire look and works well for any kind of outing — day or night,” says the designer who believes Rihanna’s printed pants and crop top, is a perfect example of getting the look right. “I think pairing a bold printed crop top or boxy top with a matching midi skirt or a structures jacket with matching cropped trousers will be a good call. Go sartorial and not costume-y by keeping the overall look streamlined by picking a colour that’s already present in the garment and wearing contemporary accessories of the same colour,” opines Tahera.
For those who prefer the simple and elegant look as opposed to funky, matching separates dipped in solid colours are sure to spice up the fashion statement. Pastel or dark colours, when paired with classy footwear and blue jewellery, are sure to amp up the look. “Solid colours trump patterns and prints for me because my style is very minimalistic and also relatively easy to accessorise. One statement accessory like a neck piece or chandelier earrings paired with matching separates go a long way in making a style statement and bundle rings are now in vogue and are always a good idea. As for bold and vibrant pieces, I would keep accessories minimal as there is already enough going on,” says designer and stylist Neha Kukreja. But she also cautions that the look can go terribly wrong! “Very often, people over-do the prints by sporting three pieces with the same print or colour — a major fashion faux pas. One piece needs to break the clustered and monotonous look — be it the coat, top or bottom. The third piece should also be from a similar colour palette, so there is no clash of colours,” says Neha. And for those who prefer a look with more flair and drama, exaggerated skirts, Aztec prints and bold stripes are all in vogue right now! According to local designer Seema Nanda, each person has their own interpretation for the trend, which is what she loves the most about it. “I prefer matching prints in solid colours as they look fabulous! But there is a thin line between daring and over the top and one thing I’d be careful with is how ‘busy’ the print is. Too much of a busy bold print can add a ton of volume which may not flatter all body types. In such cases, solid colour matching separates are the best option. I think a scarf or statement neckpiece would look great as with these two, it’s always easy to if the look is over-the-top,” says the designer.
