FIR against JNUSU prez, others over CCTV issue

- AGE CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, APRIL 2

The Delhi police has registered an FIR against Jawaharlal Nehru Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Mohit Kumar Pandey along with other officeholders after they allegedly forcibly removed the CCTV cameras from Brahmaputra Hostel. The FIR has been lodged by the Vasant Kunj (North) police station.

The entire matter surfaced and picked up heat after the university’s administration, acting on a court order, had started the process of installing CCTV cameras across the campus. The matter slipped out of hand when several students gathered around the installation site and protested against the move. Following this, Mohit Pandey and the other office holders — JNUSU general secretary Satrupa Chakravarty and union members Amal Pullarkkat, Dileep Yadav, and Abhay — turned up at the spot.

Soon, a heated argument ensued and a minor scuffle broke out. In the melee, Mr Pandey and the union members allegedly dismantled a CCTV camera outside the hostel and forced the workers to give up the installation work.

The JNU administration had planned to install CCTVs across the campus. It had roped in system analyst Satyendra and graphics analyst Deepak, along with security in-charge Naveen Yadav and three other workers. In their complaint, they claimed that as soon as they reached the corridor outside the hostel, several students arrived at the spot and started shouting slogans against the administration.

The police said an FIR was filed against Mr Pandey, Ms Chakravarty, Mr Pullarkkat, Mr Yadav and Abhay under relevant sections of the IPC on the basis of the complaint lodged by the administration.
