FIR against cricketers for singing Pak anthem

Srinagar, April 6: An FIR has been filed after a video purportedl­y showing cricket players singing the Pakistani national anthem during a tournament in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir went viral on social media.

The police called the players and organisers of the event, which was held on Sunday, for questionin­g.

“We have registered an FIR in connection with the incident and investigat­ion is on,” director general of police S.P. Vaid told PTI.

The police action came after the video showed members of the cricket team dressed in Pakistani team uniform and singing the national anthem of the neighbouri­ng country before the state of a match.

“We have to look at various aspects of the case. First of all the authentici­ty of the video has to be verified,” Mr Vaid added.

In the video, Kashmiri players from one of the teams is seen sporting green jersey and standing with right hand on their chest as Pakistan’s anthem plays over a speaker. The other team can be seen wearing a standard white uniform.

An announceme­nt on the public address system said that the Pakistani national anthem was going to be played as a “mark of respect, Geo News reported. The players belong to the Baba Darya Ud Din team. According to Kashmir Media Service, the match was played during the week PM Narendra Modi visited J&K to inaugurate the Chenani-Nashri tunnel.
