Top cop lays out rules for anti-Romeo squads in UP

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

UP DGP Sulkhan Singh has issued fresh guidelines to the police on the behavior of the socalled anti-Romeo squads.

The DGP, who held a meeting with senior police officials, issued directives to all the district level officials through video conferencing on Tuesday night, a police spokesman said on Wednesday.

The DGP said that those indulging in rowdyism need not be arrested. He said that their guardians should be called and briefed about their behavior. The anti-Romeo squads will be personally briefed about the guidelines by their seniors.

Mr Singh said that action should be taken against vigilantes indulging in violence or creating anarchy by taking the law in their hands in the name of cow protection or other issues.

The police spokesman said that directives have been issued to all the SSPs and SPs to prepare standing orders for the antiRomeo squads, clearly indicating the dos and don’ts.

The police chiefs have been asked to record the action taken in such matters. The guidelines have been issued in the wake of reports of excesses by police personnel in some cases and incidents where innocent couples have been harassed.
